Gary O’Donnell (G.O.D.) began DJing in the early 80s, primarily as a hip hop battle DJ. He then diversified into house music in 1987, and was a regular on the Amsterdam club circuit, delivering pioneering early techno/acid house sets at clubs such as Melkweg.
Upon his return to London he DJed at a number of hardcore club nights including Crazy Club @ Buzby’s (Astoria 2) as well as producing remixes for Cry Cisco (Afro dizzy act) and underground hardcore releases, including the highly popular Tainted Cash with John Truelove.
In 1994, he won the inaugural Vestax/DJ magazine championship. There followed regular house music sets at the Ministry of Sound in the mid-90s.
As house music turned into UK garage, Gary O’D became disillusioned with that strand and moved into techno and production. He made tracks with Paul Langley (Jackstar Recordings), which were released by, among others, Charlie Hall.
He is one of the admins of The Mixing Bowl and has recently had mixes commissioned by Rob Booth (Fabric/Houndstooth) for his Electronic Explorations podcast (number 60 and number 62).
So far in 2018, he has remixed Swedish artist Klara Kazmi‘s latest single, Dick Pics, and is currently working on tracks for Orin Walters/Bugz in the Attic.
His current approach is more retrospective and he aims to bring old skool DJ skills and turntablism back to the fore. In light of this, he aims to use vinyl wherever possible and will only ever use turntables when playing live sets.
